休んですみませんでした (Sorry for the Break)

最近、忙し過ぎて、ぜんぜんブログが書けませんでした。ごめんなさい。

Recently I've been so busy I haven't been able to write any blogs. I'm sorry.

夏のクラスの後、1週間、教会に子供と志願しました。毎日、私と子供はお菓子を食べたり、聖書をよんだり、クラフトを作ったり、歌ったり、おどったりました。
1日に3時間だけでしたが、それでも、私は、疲れすぎて　ほかに何もできませんでした。

After my summer class, I volunteered with children at church. Everyday we ate snacks, read the Bible, made crafts, sang and danced. It was only 3 hours a day but I was so busy I couldn't anything else.

それにしても、私とフィルは一緒に、1週間に3-4回運動したり、友だちに会ったり、デートしたりと、多忙に過ごしました。

Nevertheless, Phil and I worked out together 3-4 times a week, hung out with friends, and went on a date. It was a very nice way to spend our time.

あと、YouTubeのビデオを作りました。もうすぐ、ブログにそれを更新します。みんなが気に入ってくれたら、いいのですが。

Also, we've been making YouTube videos. Soon, we will have an updated website. We hope you like it.

にぎやきな週 (Busy Week)

先週の木曜日に私の夏の大学の授業を始まりました。Bibleについてのクラスです。木曜日は作文のしめきりでした。私のはよくなかったけれど、せいせきのたった5％ですから、しんぱいしません。授業は楽しいです。先生は大胆に 読むし、学生はしんせつし、しゅくだいとテストはかんたんなんです。あと、Bibleを読むのがすきなんです。授業は1月間しかないです。短いですね？


今週は私たちはとてもにぎやきになりました。土曜日にフィルさんのりょうしんと町の図書館にじぜんに晩御飯を食べに行きました。日曜日に2回きょうかいにBibleを子供に教えに行きました。月曜日は休みですが、フィルさんはまだ仕事がありました。でも、フィルさんの仕事の後は夫婦である友だちとパーティがあって、晩御飯を食べました。火曜日にも友だちと晩御飯をたべました。その友だちは6月に日本と中国に旅行しますから、私たちは旅行についてそうだんします。それから、水曜日は女友たちの夜遊びです。私と女友だちの2人はBBCのばんぐみを見て、ワインを飲みました。1週間に1回見てみます。本当にフィルさんは家でテレビゲームをします。毎木曜日に協会のグループに会います。一緒にBible を勉強することで仲のよい友達になりました。

Last Thursday my summer class started. It's about the Bible. On Thursday there was a paper due. Mine wasn't very good but it's only worth 5% of my grade, so I'm not worried. The class is fun. The teacher reads dramatically, the students are nice, and the homework and tests are easy. Also, I like reading the Bible. The class is only one month. Easy, right?

This week we were very busy. On Saturday, we went with Phil's parents to the town library for a charity dinner. On Sunday, we taught Sunday school at church twice. Monday was a holiday but Phil had to work. But, after he finished work we had a party with friends and ate dinner. On Tuesday we ate dinner with another friend. This friend is going to visit Japan and China in June, so we talked to her about traveling. Then, on Wednesday we had a girls night. Me and two of my friends watch a BBC program and drink wine together. We try to do it once a week. Usually, Phil plays video games at home. Every Thursday we go to church group. Because we study the Bible together we have become close friends.

There's no easy way to learn Japanese. I hear they are making a cream but...until then you're just going to have to learn it the hard way. I've been studying for 4 years on and off and here are some things I do to help learn vocabulary, practice grammar, and memorize kanji.

Learn Vocabulary
App: Anki Flashcards
Cost: Free for Droid, $15 for iPhone
How: Download this on your phone/computer and then download the shared deck "Genki 1&2 Vocabulary." These flashcards cover the same vocabulary as the Genki textbooks including all of the stuff from the back of the book where you learn kanji. Each vocabulary word has two cards, one with English on the front and one with Japanese on the front. Each time you view a card, it will give you up to four options of when you want to review that one again based on how easy it was for you.
Why: You can practice anywhere, anytime. Has a great search function when you forget a word you know you should know.

App: JED Japanese English Dictionary
Cost: Free for all
How: Download and look up a word. You want to know the word for 'night'? It's yoru and this is the kanji. Also, here are other words related to 'night,' such as 'night and day,' 'nightmare,' and 'later that night.' Click on the word for a break down of the kanji, and sometimes you'll also be given a list of conjugations and/or example sentences.
Why: It's just the best. Period.

How: Flashcards and multiple-choice game for the first Genki textbook. Sadly there is no app for the second Genki book.
Why: Good for beginners

Cost: Free
How: Study hiragana, katakana, kanji, vocabulary, and particles and then test yourself on what you've learned. Also, great grammar explanations.
Why: Great for practicing for the JLPT

Practicing Grammar 
Get a notebook app on your phone/computer whatever and organize the grammar you know. Put everything about how to use adjectives together, and so on. Refer back to this list when you're doing homework or writing in Japanese so you can make complex sentences. Don't do the bare minimum when doing grammar homework. Don't try to get a perfect score. Use all the grammar you can in every sentence and learn if you are right or wrong and how to combine everything properly.

Memorize Kanji

I've heard it said that you should learn the radicals first and maybe that helps but that's not how I do it. I started learning to write the kanji in the back of the Genki book in classes as well as learning to recognize the kanji in the chapter dialogues. Make a list of the kanji you're supposed to know and write them over and over until you know them and then never write the hiragana again.

初めまして。ベサニーとフィルと猫のマシーうさぎです。８年間で３つの州と４つの町と８つのマンションで住んでいました。ひとつの場所にずっと住んでいるのは好きではないんです。去年日本に行きました。札幌と大阪と東京で友だちに会いました。めっちゃ楽しかったですね！2016年が2017年に移住したいと思っています。

In America, weddings are a big business. At an average wedding there are 150 people and they costs around $30,000. Average wedding ceremony is 30 minutes and there there is a party. This party is called a reception. But, at especially very religious weddings, the ceremony can last up to 4 hours and then there is the reception. It’s a long time isn’t it?! Usually, American’s say the it is the bride’s special day so there is a lot of planning. On the day of the wedding the bride should not become upset. The American television program, “Bridezilla,” is about brides who become like Godzilla. It is funny but scary. Usually the bride wears a white dress and veil. There are many kinds of veils. A long time ago, they wore a very long veil At the reception the veil was used to decorate the cake table. Then it was used to decorate the first child’s crib. The veil is like wrapping paper, so at the wedding, the bride’s father unwraps her for the groom. The bride and groom rarely wear gloves.The bride also needs something old, something new, something borrowed, and something blue. These things are often sentimental. The bride often wears a  blue garter on her leg. At the reception, the groom will remove it and throw it at the men who are not married. At the reception the bride also throws her flowers to the woman who are not married. They say the man who catches the garter and the woman who catches the flowers will be the next to be married. Usually, the brides close female relatives and friends become bridesmaids. They will wear a pretty and expensive dress and help the bride. The average bridesmaid’s dress costs $150. At the wedding the maid of honor will hold the brides flowers and at the reception will give a speech. The groom’s close male relatives and friends will become groomsmen. They will wear tuxedos. The best man will hold the rings and at the reception will give a speech. Tuxedos usually cost $150 also. Usually, the maid of honor and the best man are the bride and grooms favorite people. At my wedding my maid of honor was my best friend and Phil's best man was his friend he knew the longest amount of time, but sometimes they are the older sister and older brother. The bridesmaids and groomsmen are also the favorite people or siblings. It is better if the bride and groom are fond of these people, but sometimes it is obligation. A long time ago, the bride, maid of honor, and bridesmaids would wear a white dress and veil. It was to confuse evil spirits and keep them away from the bride.　It is not so nowadays. Usually the groom stands at the front of the wedding ceremony. The Maid of honor and best man go to the front together. Then the bridesmaids and groomsmen in pairs. The flower girl and ring bearer are next. The bride and her father are last. If the bride and groom know a young girl and young boy, the young girl will scatter flower petals before the bride enters the ceremony and the young boy will bring the rings. At the reception, the bride and groom dance, feed each other cake, and drink champagne. People who go to a wedding bring presents. Usually household items. So, if you go to a wedding, what should you wear? That is difficult! I will write about it later.

冬休みと新しい学期 (My Winter Vacation)

冬休みはよかったです。カリフォルニア州のサンディエゴに友だちの結婚しきに行きました。 サンディエゴで６年かん住んでいましたので、大好きです。サンディエゴのほうが私の町より大きですので、サンディエゴのほうが私の町よりたくさんの国の文化を見ることができます。私の町にはいい日本食や韓国料理のレストランがあまりありません。だから、サンディエゴに行った時には、めっちゃ外国の食べ物を食べます。今回の旅行韓国のバーベキューややきそばやかつどんを食べました。おいしくて、うれしかったよ！　

私の町に帰えった後もおもしろかったです。私は日本人の友だちに運転すのるを教えてあげたり、すいさいが（水彩画）をかいたり、クリスマス休みに家族に会ったりしました。

先週大学がはじまりました。新しい授業はおもしろいと思います。中国の文学授業と東アジアの地理授業と日本語授業と世界の音楽の文化を学ぶ授業と日本のじじもんだい授業とります。　

Winter break was great. I went to San Diego, California for a friends weddings. I lived in San Diego for 6 years so I love it there. San Diego is bigger than my city, so San Diego has more types of nationalities. My city does not have many good Japanese and Korean restaurants for example. Therefore, when we visit San Diego, we eat lots of foreign food. On this trip we had Korean barbeque, yakisoba, and katsudon.

After we returned to my city, it was interesting. I taught my Japanese friend how to drive, painted some watercolor paintings, and visited family on Christmas, for example.

Tomorrow, school begins again. I think my new classes will interesting. I am taking Chinese literature class, East Asian geography, Japanese language, world culture music, and current topics in Japan.

Who Are We & Why Should You Care?

My name is Bethany and I am pretty normal, at least, I like to think so. I didn't know what I wanted to do with my life when I was younger so I'm a little older than most of the other juniors at my university. I've been married 8 years and in that time have lived in 8 apartments in 4 cities in 3 states.

My husband and I are average Americans who....do average American things...? We teach Sunday school at church; we scour our city for anything remotely close to authentic Asian cuisine; we snub our noses at non-craft beers; we refuse to learn what good wine is because that would defeat its purpose; and we binge on Netflix and play video games all weekend. I like to watercolor and (attempt) to do the nail art on Pinterest. I'm getting my bachelor's in International Relations and Asian Studies in Spring 2016. My husband, Phil, knew what he wanted to do from age 14 - cars. So he is a high-end auto mechanic and loves it.

To be honest, I have a gross distaste for social media so I'm writing this blog with one reader in mind; my fellow Japanophiles. As a Japanophile, I search the web for blogs of expats living in Japan, talking about grand festivals and mundane shopping experiences. But many are not being kept up regularly so I thought, why don't I make one.

Problem, of course, is that I don't live in Japan....not yet. I will study abroad there next fall for 5 wonderful months. My husband, in case you're wondering, will support me from our home base in North Carolina, where he will grow a full beard and play video games with his bachelor friends. He'll be just fine, is what I'm saying.

So what should I write about in the meantime? I thought I'd write about the grand festivals and mundane shopping experiences here for one thing. If there are Japanese or other foreigners thinking of moving to America, maybe they want to know these things I take for granted. Also, I'll write about the preparation to study abroad, random things I will learn in Japanese language and Asian Studies classes I'm taking in school until then, and about our vacation to Japan earlier this year. When my study abroad program starts next year I'll write all the details here (or forget for weeks or months at a time like a lot of the bloggers I follow, though I love them all <3). 

After graduation, it is our greatest wish to move to Japan to work and live there. Forever? Maybe. I'll get into the details in a later post, but we are up for anything God wants to throw at us. We'd be most excited if He wants us in South East Asia but we try to be open to anything. It's worked for us so far.
