休んですみませんでした (Sorry for the Break)

最近、忙し過ぎて、ぜんぜんブログが書けませんでした。ごめんなさい。

Recently I've been so busy I haven't been able to write any blogs. I'm sorry.

夏のクラスの後、1週間、教会に子供と志願しました。毎日、私と子供はお菓子を食べたり、聖書をよんだり、クラフトを作ったり、歌ったり、おどったりました。
1日に3時間だけでしたが、それでも、私は、疲れすぎて　ほかに何もできませんでした。

After my summer class, I volunteered with children at church. Everyday we ate snacks, read the Bible, made crafts, sang and danced. It was only 3 hours a day but I was so busy I couldn't anything else.

それにしても、私とフィルは一緒に、1週間に3-4回運動したり、友だちに会ったり、デートしたりと、多忙に過ごしました。

Nevertheless, Phil and I worked out together 3-4 times a week, hung out with friends, and went on a date. It was a very nice way to spend our time.

あと、YouTubeのビデオを作りました。もうすぐ、ブログにそれを更新します。みんなが気に入ってくれたら、いいのですが。

Also, we've been making YouTube videos. Soon, we will have an updated website. We hope you like it.

にぎやきな週 (Busy Week)

先週の木曜日に私の夏の大学の授業を始まりました。Bibleについてのクラスです。木曜日は作文のしめきりでした。私のはよくなかったけれど、せいせきのたった5％ですから、しんぱいしません。授業は楽しいです。先生は大胆に 読むし、学生はしんせつし、しゅくだいとテストはかんたんなんです。あと、Bibleを読むのがすきなんです。授業は1月間しかないです。短いですね？


今週は私たちはとてもにぎやきになりました。土曜日にフィルさんのりょうしんと町の図書館にじぜんに晩御飯を食べに行きました。日曜日に2回きょうかいにBibleを子供に教えに行きました。月曜日は休みですが、フィルさんはまだ仕事がありました。でも、フィルさんの仕事の後は夫婦である友だちとパーティがあって、晩御飯を食べました。火曜日にも友だちと晩御飯をたべました。その友だちは6月に日本と中国に旅行しますから、私たちは旅行についてそうだんします。それから、水曜日は女友たちの夜遊びです。私と女友だちの2人はBBCのばんぐみを見て、ワインを飲みました。1週間に1回見てみます。本当にフィルさんは家でテレビゲームをします。毎木曜日に協会のグループに会います。一緒にBible を勉強することで仲のよい友達になりました。

Last Thursday my summer class started. It's about the Bible. On Thursday there was a paper due. Mine wasn't very good but it's only worth 5% of my grade, so I'm not worried. The class is fun. The teacher reads dramatically, the students are nice, and the homework and tests are easy. Also, I like reading the Bible. The class is only one month. Easy, right?

This week we were very busy. On Saturday, we went with Phil's parents to the town library for a charity dinner. On Sunday, we taught Sunday school at church twice. Monday was a holiday but Phil had to work. But, after he finished work we had a party with friends and ate dinner. On Tuesday we ate dinner with another friend. This friend is going to visit Japan and China in June, so we talked to her about traveling. Then, on Wednesday we had a girls night. Me and two of my friends watch a BBC program and drink wine together. We try to do it once a week. Usually, Phil plays video games at home. Every Thursday we go to church group. Because we study the Bible together we have become close friends.

Wal-Mart

アメリカに来た時、店まずにいったほうがいいのは、Wal・Martです。ドン・キホーテににています。Wal・Martですべて物を買うのがさいてきです。食べ物や服や所帯道具があります。あととても安いねだんでかえます。服と家具は一番高品質ではありませんが、始のでさまざまなものをさがすのにいい所です。

そこで、プリペイドフォンも買います。アメリカへ観光客や留学生としてであれば、それはいい予定ですね。

小さいシャンプーや練歯磨などは正シャンプーと薬の近くに見つけられます。飛行機で旅行したら、それは持って来られます。

When you come to America, the first store you should go to is Wal-Mart. It is like Don Quixote. Wal-Mart has everything you need to buy. It has food, clothes, household goods, etc. Plus, the prices are cheap. The clothes and furniture might not be the best quality but, it's a great place when you're just beginning.

You can also buy prepaid cell phones there. If you are on vacation or are an international student in America, that is a good idea.

You can find small shampoo, toothpastes, etc near the medicine and regular shampoo. If you are flying, you can bring these. They are the right size.

アメリカで朝ご飯 (Breakfast in America)

先週はベトナムのコーヒーを買いにいきました。それから、家に伝統的なアメリカの朝御飯を食べに帰りました。私たちはシイリアルをあまり食べませんが、アメリカで本当普通です。

ほとんど毎日フィルさんは朝ご飯を料理します。ふつうは卵とトーストとトルコのベーコンを食べて、オレンジジュースとコーヒーを飲みます。でも、私はコーヒーを飲みません。カフェインを飲んだら、寝られないんです。それは健康な朝ご飯ですが、アメリカで朝ご飯はよく不健康です。ふつう朝ご飯はシリアルです。健康なシリアル少しがありますが、大抵子供のシリアルは甘くて、めっちゃ不健康です。レストランで朝ご飯を食べたら、よくパンケーキやワッフルやドーナツなどを食べます。甘すぎて、アイスクリームを食べたら、同じですね？大きい卵焼き（オムレツ）も人気があります。たぶん大きすぎです。日本の休みの時あまり朝ご飯のレストランを見ませんでした。時々駅でパティシエかカフェを見ましたが、パンは小さかったです。

ふつうに朝ご飯は何を食べますか？アメリカの朝ご飯が好きですか？

Last week we went to buy Vietnamese coffee. Then we went back home for traditional American breakfast. We don't eat cereal often but it is really common in America.

Phil makes breakfast almost every day. Normally, we eat eggs, toast, and turkey bacon and drink orange juice and coffee. But I don't drink coffee. If I have caffeine I won't be able to sleep. Ours is a healthy breakfast but in America, breakfast is usually unhealthy. Normal breakfast here is cold cereal. There a some healthy cereals but children's cereal is very sweet and unhealthy. If we go to a restaurant for breakfast, we often eat pancakes, donuts, etc. It's so sweet, we might as well eat ice cream. Big omelettes are also popular here. Maybe too big. When we vacationed in Japan, we hardly saw any breakfast restaurants. Sometimes in train stations there would be a pastry shop or cafe, but the pastry was so small.

アメリカの夏休み

アメリカの夏休みは楽しいです。ふつうは六月から九月まで学校が休みなので、旅行をするいい時です。時々子供はキャンプにいきますが、ちょっと高いです。旅行やキャンプに行けないたら、家にいたり、テレビを見たり、テレビゲームをしたり、外で友だちとあそんだりします。ふつうはお母さんとお父さんは仕事をしていますので、高校生は一人で家にいますが、若い子供はベビーシッターと家にいます。大抵大学生は家に帰って、アルバイトをします。夏休みはめっちゃ楽しくて、暇ですね。 

来週私の夏休みが始まりますので、めっちゃ嬉しい！たくさん日本語を勉強したり、水彩画を描いたり、ブログを書いたり、韓国のドラマを見たりするでしょう。そして、一週間15時間アルバイトをします。来学期は福岡に留学しますので、勉強して、荷物を詰めておきます。

日本人の友だちは私は「アメリカのデートにつてのブログを書きたい」と言っていました。ブログとYouTube、どちらのほうがいいと思いますか？

スモールトーク (Small Talk)

アメリカ人はスモールトークが大好きですので、習ったら、いいです。初めて会う時は大抵日本と同じです。

「名前なんですか？」「仕事は何をしていますか？」「趣味は何ですか？」

でも、アメリカでは大抵たくさん質問を聞きます。

「仕事は面白いですか？楽しいですか？難しいですか？」「趣味は高いですか？簡単ですか？」

そして、大抵あなたの仕事と趣味の経験についてに話します。

「私のお父さんも弁護士です。」「スキーしてみましたが、上手ではありませんでした。」

だから、会話が続くのはめっちゃ重要です。

「そうですか？どんな弁護士ですか？」「そうですか？練習したら、上手になって、楽しくなると思います。」


何処でもスモールトークを話します。スーパーのレジやエレベーターでは他人はあなたに話してくれます。

「元気ですか？お目当てのものは見つかりましたか？」「いい天気ですね？」「スポーツゲームをみましたか？」

アメリカ人は無言がすきじゃないです。

Americans love small talk so it is good to learn. When you first meet someone, it is usually the same as in Japan.

“What is your name?” “What is your job?” “What do you do for fun?”

But in America we ask many questions.

“Is your job interesting? fun? hard?” “Is your hobby expensive? easy?”

And usually people will talk about an experience with your job and hobby.

“Is that so? My dad is a lawyer too.” “I tried skiing but I wasn’t good at it.”

Therefore, it is very important to keep the conversation going.

“Oh really? What kind of lawyer is he?” “Oh? If you practice you will become good and it will be fun.”

Small talk can happen anywhere. For example, at the grocery store checkout line and the elevator strangers will talk to you.

“How are you? Did you find everything okay?” “It’s good weather, isn’t it?” “Did you watch the sports game?”

Americans don’t like silence.

By the way, we usually say “Excuse me,” “Hello,” and “How are you?” You don’t have to answer but it’s good if you do. For example, at the grocery store, someone who walks in front of you will say, “Excuse me” or “Sorry.” You can say, “It’s okay.”

Renting an apartment in America is easy. There are many websites you look at. For example, www.rent.com, www.forrent.com, www.apartments.com. You can look at apartments you like by yourself. You don’t need a Realtor.

Big cities are more expensive than small cities. Downtown is also more expensive. Just like in Japan, I think. San Diego, California is a big city. Our apartments in San Diego and in North Carolina are similar but the one in San Diego was smaller and in a popular neighborhood. The San Diego apartment was 700sf and cost $1400. Our apartment in North Carolina is 865sf and costs $750.

Apartments usually have application fees but they are cheap. Usually $35-100. There is also a security deposit. The security deposit is usually half a month’s rent. When you move out, if the apartment is clean you can get the security deposit back. In most apartments you can own pets but rent may increase. But it's usually cheap. For example, it could be $35-100. Apartments sometimes don’t allow big dogs.

Apartments usually have a refrigerator, range, oven, and microwave, usually they have a dishwasher and air conditioning, and sometimes they have washing and drying machines. If they don’t have a washing and drying machine, they often have a laundry room.

Apartments may have big or small parking lots. If the parking lot is small, you usually get only one assigned parking space. So if you have two cars you will park on the street. Usually you can rent an extra parking space or garage. It will probably cost $100.

Escondido, California is 30 minutes north of San Diego. In 1996 in Escondido, Stone Brewery started. About seven times a year they make a special beer. This beer is called “Enjoy By...” This week we had “Enjoy By 3/14/15.” If you drink it after 3/14/15 the flavor will change, so you should drink it before 3/14/15. That is why it is called “Enjoy by 3/14/15.” There are some people who like to break rules, so they will drink it on 3/15/15 and take pictures. We have had many “Enjoy By…” beers. For example, “Enjoy By 12/26/14” and “Enjoy By 5/17/13.” Each one tastes different.

2015 春休み (2015 Spring Break)

今週は春休みでした。私は忙しくて、楽しかったです。たくさんテレべゲームをしたり、テレビをみ見たり、少し勉強したりました。そして、もっとブログポストも書きました。;)


Last week was spring break. It was busy and fun. I played lots of video games, watched lots of TV and did a little bit of homework. Also, I wrote more blogs. ;)

There's no easy way to learn Japanese. I hear they are making a cream but...until then you're just going to have to learn it the hard way. I've been studying for 4 years on and off and here are some things I do to help learn vocabulary, practice grammar, and memorize kanji.

Learn Vocabulary
App: Anki Flashcards
Cost: Free for Droid, $15 for iPhone
How: Download this on your phone/computer and then download the shared deck "Genki 1&2 Vocabulary." These flashcards cover the same vocabulary as the Genki textbooks including all of the stuff from the back of the book where you learn kanji. Each vocabulary word has two cards, one with English on the front and one with Japanese on the front. Each time you view a card, it will give you up to four options of when you want to review that one again based on how easy it was for you.
Why: You can practice anywhere, anytime. Has a great search function when you forget a word you know you should know.

App: JED Japanese English Dictionary
Cost: Free for all
How: Download and look up a word. You want to know the word for 'night'? It's yoru and this is the kanji. Also, here are other words related to 'night,' such as 'night and day,' 'nightmare,' and 'later that night.' Click on the word for a break down of the kanji, and sometimes you'll also be given a list of conjugations and/or example sentences.
Why: It's just the best. Period.

Cost: Free for all
How: Flashcards and multiple-choice game for the first Genki textbook. Sadly there is no app for the second Genki book.
Why: Good for beginners

Cost: Free
How: Study hiragana, katakana, kanji, vocabulary, and particles and then test yourself on what you've learned. Also, great grammar explanations.
Why: Great for practicing for the JLPT

Practicing Grammar 
Get a notebook app on your phone/computer whatever and organize the grammar you know. Put everything about how to use adjectives together, and so on. Refer back to this list when you're doing homework or writing in Japanese so you can make complex sentences. Don't do the bare minimum when doing grammar homework. Don't try to get a perfect score. Use all the grammar you can in every sentence and learn if you are right or wrong and how to combine everything properly.

Memorize Kanji

I've heard it said that you should learn the radicals first and maybe that helps but that's not how I do it. I started learning to write the kanji in the back of the Genki book in classes as well as learning to recognize the kanji in the chapter dialogues. Make a list of the kanji you're supposed to know and write them over and over until you know them and then never write the hiragana again.

This albino cornsnake costs $100. Before we were married we had a snake just like this one. This bearded dragon lizard costs $70. This guinea pig costs $40.

アメリカのバレンタインデー (Valentine's Day in America)

アメリカでバレタインは本当にロマンチックな日です。彼と彼女はデートをします。男の人は女の人にきれいなレストランに連れて行って、プレセントをあげます。プレセントは花やチョコレートや宝飾品があるかもしれません。たいてい男の人がヂートを計画しますが、時々女の人も計画します。彼か彼女がいなかったら、さびしくなるかもしれません。だから、そうい人たちのためのパーテーがあります。昨日、大学生の男の人が”赤と黄と緑パーチーがある”と言っているを聞きました。彼か彼女がいたら赤い服を着て、だれか好きな人がいたら黄い服を着て、シングルだら緑服を着るそうです。おもしろいね？

学校で子供はバレタインのカードとおかしをかわします。パーチーがあるかもしれません。

今年私はバレタインのデートを計画しました。新しいSpongeBob SquarePants映画を見ました。子供の映画ですから、ロマンチックじゃなさそうですね？でも十年前初めてデートで初めて映画を見ました。映画の後で安いレストランで晩ご飯を食べました。安いので、ひまでした。晩ご飯の後でペット屋に行って、家で一緒にテレビガームをしました。

In America, Valentines Day is a very romantic day. Boyfriends and girlfriends go out on dates. Maybe the guy will take his girlfriend to a nice restaurant and give her a present. The present could be flowers, chocolates, jewelry etc. Usually the man plans the date but sometimes the woman plans it. If you do not have a boyfriend or girlfriend maybe you will become lonely.So, there are parties for those people. Yesterday I heard a male college student say there is a red, yellow, green party. It seems that if you have a boyfriend or girlfriend you wear red clothes, if you like someone you wear yellow clothes, and if you are single you wear green clothes. It is interesting, isn't it?

At school, children will exchange Valentine's cards and treats. Maybe they will have a party.

This year, I planned our Valentines date.We will watch the new SpongeBob SquarePants movie. It is a childrens movie so it doesn't seem romantic, does it? But 10 years ago we watched the first movie for our first date. After the movie we went to a pet store and played video games together at home.
